Campeonato Gaúcho 2nd round report

Kléber celebrates his first Grêmio goal against Canoas (Mateus Bruxel/Agência RBS)
GRÊMIO recorded their first win of the championship in a full round of midweek fixtures, as Caxias remain the Gauchão’s only team with a 100% record.

New signing Kléber scored his first goal in Grêmio colours inside the opening minute against Canoas, but the Tricolor’s lead was cancelled out as Marciel headed in for the hosts. Second-half goals from Saimon and Bolivian Marcelo Moreno ruled any repeat of Grêmio’s first round upset, with Caio Júnior claiming his first win as coach.

Internacional were handed their second straight defeat in the Gauchão, less than twenty-four hours after winning in the Copa Libertadores. Newly promoted Cerâmica took full advantage of Inter’s inexperienced line up, with Rogerinho’s free-kick adding to Cidinho’s right-footed drive. Inter replied after the restart as a central defender Lima hit a delightful free-kick but the Colorado found themselves unable to add a second with substitute, Augusto heading narrowly wide.

First-half strikes from defenders Lacerda and Fabinho ensured Caxias of their second win in as many games, in a 2-0 win at Lajeadense. The home side fell behind as early as the eighth minute before Caxias doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time ensuring that there would be no repeat of Lajeadense’s heroics, following their shock win at Grêmio on the opening weekend, whilst Paulo Porto’s Caxias remain the only the club with a 100% record.

In the Santa Cruz ‘Ave-Cruz’ clássico, goals from Leonardo and Creedance saw Santa Cruz overcome neighbours Avenida 2-0.

Wednesday’s results:
São José 3-0 Veranópolis
Canoas 1-3 Grêmio
São Luiz 0-0 Cruzeiro-RS
Ypiranga 0-0 Novo Hamburgo
Thursday’s results:
Lajeadense 0-2 Caxias
Santa Cruz-RS 2-0 Avenida
Internacional 1-2 Cerâmica
Juventude 3-0 Pelotas
