CAXIAS lost their 100% record midweek after being held at home to Santa Cruz, whilst city rivals Juventude were on the receiving end of a unlikely defeat.
Caxias fall second in Group 1 as Santa Cruz held out for a point at the Estádio Centenário. Caxias trailed as Leonardo became the first player to breech the home side’s defence in four games, as unfancied Santa Cruz went ahead. Vanderlei saw a second-half penalty appeal waved away as Caxias piled the pressure and Everaldo headed off-target. But the equaliser duly came on 78 minutes as Vanderlei fired in from twelve yards.
Cruzeiro edged aboove Caxias into pole-position to lead Group 1 on goal difference after seeing off São Jose 4-1. Gavião grabbed a hat-trick as Cruzeiro remain unbeaten.
Lajeadense forged a two point lead in Group 2 with their third victory in four games against Cerâmica. Ramos and Gabriel were on target for Lajeadense to cancel out Dinei’s opener.
The shock of the round however was at Veranópolis as Juventude were brought down to earth with bump just days after an impressive victory over Grêmio. Lê’s first of two strikes, opened the floodgates for Veranópolis who stunned Juventude, taking a four goal lead before Ju replied twice late on through Nico Martínez and Zulú before Maranhão found himself through on goal to complete a 5-2 rout.
Pelotas picked up their first points of the season under new coach Beto Almeida, with Maicon Sapucaia scoring the only goal of the game against fellow strugglers Ypiranga.
The fifth round should be the most significant of the championship so far with the state’s two biggest derbies being played on Sunday. Caxias face Juventude in the Ca-Ju clássico whilst in Porto Alegre, Grêmio host Internacional in the 390th edition of Porto Alegre’s famous Gre-Nal derby.
