Campeonato Gaúcho 5th round report

Grêmio and Inter shared the points in the 390th Gre-Nal clássico (Diego Vara/ZH)

GRÊMIO and Internacional split the points on Sunday, in the first Gre-Nal clássico of the year. But it was Caxias who earned local bragging rights over Juventude in the weekend’s other big game – the Ca-Ju clássico. Lajeadense continue to set the pace in Group 1.

Grêmio had a goal chalked off in the opening exchanges as Marcelo Moreno and Leandro linked up from an offside position and the Bolivian forward was denied, when his seemingly goal bound volley was blocked by Bolívar from six yards. And Grêmio were made to rue their missed opportunities against a weakened Inter side when the Colorado took the lead in fortuitous fashion. Debutant Dátolo hopeful long-range attempt was deflected of the head of Douglas Grolli in the 22nd minute. It took just five minutes for Grêmio to put themselves back on level terms as Marquinhos’ inviting free-kick from the left side of the eighteen yard area, found its way past Muriel into the Inter goal. Worse was to come for Inter when Josimar was adjudged to have bundled over Marcelo Moreno inside box, much to frustration of the Inter team, with Moreno sending the resulting penalty, low into the bottom left corner. Moreno should have extended Grêmio’s lead moments later but was thwarted by some last-ditch defending from Inter, following Fernando’s mazy run and left-footed strike across goal. In the second-half, tensions threatened to boil over when Jô and Douglas Grolli became entangled briefly inside the Grêmio goalmouth and the following corner would prove decisive, with Bolívar’s bullet-header putting Inter back on level terms. In the dying stages, Muriel was on hand to superbly denying Kléber’s header from close range as the two Porto Alegre rivals took a share of spoils.

In Caxias do Sul, a 3-1 victory in the Ca-Ju clássico put unbeaten Caxias top of Group 2 . Caxias took a deserved lead on 4-1 minutes with Caion’s header capping over a superb team goal. A more offensive Juventude drew level seven minutes after the restart through Rafael Pereira but Caxias immediately hit back as Diego Torres fired home from close range sixty seconds later. Full-back Fabinho wrapped things up on 75 minutes with a fierce strike.

Lajeadense sit top of Group One with ten points following their 1-1 draw in Porto Alegre with Cruzeiro. Ramos replied for Lajeadense midway through the opening period after Maxwell’s first minute opener.
