Campeonato Gaúcho 7th round report

Dagoberto (L) and Oscar twice combined as Inter ended Caxias' unbeaten run

INTERNACIONAL ended Group Two leader’s Caxias’ unbeaten record on Sunday whilst Group One pacesetters Lajeadense were stunned by strugglers Avenida.

In Group 2, Caxias were handed a 2-0 home defeat by a full-strength Inter side as the Colorado align their sights on the Taça Piratini title. Dagoberto side-footed Inter in front after just four minutes at the Estádio Centenario, scoring his first goal following his pre-season transfer. Despite a strong response from Caxias, with the post coming to Inter’s rescue, the former São Paulo man doubled the Colorados tally before half-time, with Oscar again the provider following a clinical one-two.

High-flying Lajeadense were left with a slender lead at the top of Group One, after falling 1-0 to Avenida. Alex Amado broke the deadlock in the 37th minute after Fernando had saved well from Flaviano. And Lajeadense stepped up their attempts in the second period but last season’s second division champions were able to hold firm, as the hots notched their first win in six.

Grêmio ran out 4-1 winners against Santa Cruz despite trailing to Cristano’s 16th minute strike. Naldo quickly replied for the Tricolor, scoring his first of two goals with Douglas Grolli and Kléber aldo getting on the scoresheet.

Juventude cemented their place in the Taça Piratini quarter-finals after a goalless draw against Novo Hamburgo. Both groups are left looking extremely tight with just two rounds remaining before the play-offs.

Saturday’s results (standings):
Cruzeiro 4-0 Canoas

Sunday’s results:
